WhatsApp hides artificial intelligence in a separate tab

This week, WhatsApp delighted users with several long-awaited features: calling finally launched on the web, new tools for managing media and surveys were added, and details of a premium subscription with customizable appearance were revealed. This article covers all the key updates from the past week.

Table of Contents

Saving draft photos and videos in chats

WhatsApp is introducing a feature that allows users to save draft photos and videos.

How it will work
When editing an image or video (cropping, adding drawings, or stickers), a “Save” button will appear in the chat interface next to the quality switch. Tapping this saves the finished file with the edits to the Photos library without sending it to the chat. A confirmation message appears in the center of the screen.

Why is this necessary

Previously, users had to either send the file or lose all changes upon exiting. The new option allows users to delay sending while preserving the quality and all edits, which is convenient when preparing content or when they need to return to editing later.

Status
This feature is available to some WhatsApp beta testers for iOS. Some users of the stable version may also receive it.

Calling in WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp is gradually introducing voice and video calling to the web version. Read more in our dedicated article about this new feature.

How it will work

The WhatsApp Web client finally adds the ability to make voice and video calls directly from your browser. Simply open any private chat and tap the call icon. Calls are protected by end-to-end encryption (Signal protocol), and screen sharing is also supported during video calls.

Why is this necessary

This is a long-awaited feature for users who work on a computer without installing the desktop app. It is especially important for Linux users who don’t have the native WhatsApp app. Now you can participate in video meetings and calls directly from your browser.

Status
This feature has started rolling out to participants in the WhatsApp Web beta program. More widespread availability will be available in the coming weeks. Group calling will be available later.

Premium Customization: Themes, Icons, Accent Color

WhatsApp is working on new premium features for customizing the app’s theme, icon, and accent color.

How it will work

With the new paid subscription, users will be able to customize the app’s appearance. There are 14 new icons (including Aurora, Galaxy, Neon, and others) and 7 solid color options (blue, pink, purple, etc.). You can also choose an accent color for the interface from 19 shades (from classic green to golden yellow). The selected color will be applied to filters, tabs, buttons, and other elements.

Why is this necessary

For those who want to personalize WhatsApp to suit their style or improve visual perception (for example, if you suffer from color blindness). The subscription remains completely optional; basic functionality is free.

Status
Features are in development for Android. The exact price and launch date have not yet been announced.

Quick access to settings and profile cover

WhatsApp is introducing a feature that adds a settings tab to the interface.

How it will work

Two new ways to open settings have been added to the interface: either the profile icon in the top bar or a separate “You” tab in the bottom navigation (there are now five tabs). A profile cover is also being tested—for now, only the default one, without the ability to change it. It will be customizable in the future.

Why is this necessary

Simplifies access to settings and helps you quickly switch between accounts (primary and secondary). A visual cue reduces the risk of sending a message from the wrong account.

This feature is available to some WhatsApp for Android beta testers. It’s not yet known which of the two options will become permanent.

Dedicated AI Tab

WhatsApp is working on a dedicated tab that will centralize all features using artificial intelligence.

How it will work

A new AI tab will appear in the bottom bar, replacing the “Communities” tab (communities will remain available in “Chats”). This tab brings together all AI tools: image generation, photo animation, AI-assisted calls, and AI-assisted conversation history. The floating AI button in Chats will be removed.

Why is this necessary

Centralizing AI features makes them easier to use and the Chats interface cleaner. Users who don’t use AI will no longer see unnecessary elements.

This feature is in development for Android. The release date has not been specified.

Advanced Poll Settings: Privacy and Expiration

WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to manage privacy and expiration settings for polls.

How it will work
When creating a poll, three options will appear in a new settings section:

  • Allow multiple choices (already available).
  • Hide voters – no one, including the creator, will see who selected which option.
  • Set an end date – after the specified time, the poll closes and the results are recorded.

Why is this necessary
Anonymity in polls allows for more honest responses, especially on sensitive topics. The end timer ensures the results are up-to-date and prevents backdating.

Status
This feature is in development for Android. It will be available in a future update.

Conclusion

WhatsApp is actively expanding the functionality of its web client, bringing it closer to the capabilities of its mobile apps. At the same time, customization and AI tools are being developed, with some of them becoming paid options. Updates to polls and media drafts make everyday communication more convenient and secure.

At GREEN-API, we’re keeping an eye on the latest news and will keep you updated on any significant updates. We’re also constantly working to introduce new features to our service to make your experience even more convenient. Follow our blog to stay up-to-date on new and useful features in WhatsApp!
