AI assistant in WhatsApp

WhatsApp continues to roll out intelligent features with a focus on privacy. Writing Assistant, an AI-powered tool that allows users to improve their messages, has entered beta testing. Users can correct grammar or completely change the tone of their writing. This ensures that the original text is never shared outside the device and is not accessible to WhatsApp, Meta, or third parties.

What is it

This new feature, integrated into the message input field, acts as a personal and private editor. It enables users to rephrase, correct, or stylistically enhance their text before sending, using artificial intelligence.

A key feature is the use of Private Processing technology. When a user activates the assistant, their request is sent to WhatsApp’s secure infrastructure via encrypted connections and anonymous routing. This system generates improvement suggestions without storing message data or associating it with the sender’s identity. The original and improved text never leave the secure environment of the user’s device.

Why is it needed

This feature offers not just error correction, but contextual text transformation, opening up new possibilities for clear and effective communication.

  • Improving the professionalism of business correspondence. The “Professional” tone allows you to instantly adapt your message for communication with colleagues, clients, or partners, making it more structured and formal without losing meaning. This reduces the risk of misunderstandings in work chats.
  • Adapting messages to context and emotion. Often, you need to support a friend, share a joke, or be tactful. The “Supportive” and “Funny” tones provide a tool for quickly fine-tuning a message’s style, which strengthens emotional connection and prevents misinterpretation.
  • Overcoming language barriers and literacy. The basic “Rephrase” tone helps correct grammar errors and improve clarity and fluency. This is especially valuable for users communicating in a language other than their native language and for maintaining the high quality of any correspondence.

How it will work

This feature will be completely optional and user-configurable.

  1. In WhatsApp settings, you will need to enable “Private Processing.” After doing so, a new button for invoking the AI assistant will appear in the emoji panel next to the input field.
  2. After writing a draft message, the user taps this button and selects the desired tone: “Rephrase,” “Professional,” “Supportive,” or “Funny.”
  3. The Private Processing system instantly generates at least three alternative text options. The user reviews them, selects the appropriate one, or keeps the original.
  4. The selected option is inserted into the input field. The recipient will see only the final text, without any indication that the AI assistant was used.

Availability

This feature is in active development and is currently being tested as part of the WhatsApp beta program for Android.

The developers are improving the assistant’s integration with the Private Processing system and the messenger interface. Official global release dates have not yet been announced. Once the feature is stable and ready for widespread implementation, it will appear in a future app update.

Conclusion

The writing assistant is an evolutionary step from passive conversation protection to active tools that help users create content safely and effectively. WhatsApp demonstrates that the development of artificial intelligence and privacy protection are not mutually exclusive, but complementary goals.

This tool promises to reduce communication barriers, save time on editing, and give users greater confidence in how their messages will be received. All this without compromising the fundamental principle of privacy on which trust in the platform is built.
