WhatsApp has made groups smarter

This week, WhatsApp delighted users with several significant updates: from interface improvements and new security features to the long-awaited release of the ability to share group history with new members. Read about all the key updates in our digest.

Table of Contents

Statuses right in the top bar

WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow status updates to be displayed in the top bar of the app.

How it will work
A new area will appear at the top of the Chats screen, displaying the avatars of contacts who have recently posted statuses. As you scroll down the chat list, this area turns into a separate row with horizontal scrolling, allowing you to quickly view all your recent statuses without having to go to the Updates tab.

Why it’s needed
This feature saves time: you no longer have to open friends’ updates every time you see which of your loved ones has shared a status. It’s especially convenient for quickly checking new posts directly from the main chat window.

Status
This feature is in early development for Android. A release is not yet guaranteed, and interface changes are possible.

New Liquid Glass design for WhatsApp Business

WhatsApp has begun rolling out the new Liquid Glass interface to some users who have installed the latest WhatsApp Business update.

How it will work
Some WhatsApp Business users on iOS have begun receiving an interface update in the style of Liquid Glass, the design system introduced by Apple in iOS 26. Key changes include a floating translucent tab bar, a blurred keyboard, and new effects on buttons and context menus. All of this creates a sense of depth and modernity.

Why it’s needed
The update visually refreshes the app, bringing it more in line with current iOS standards. While this feature is currently available to a limited number of users, its arrival signals that it will soon be expanded.

Status
Available to some WhatsApp Business users on iOS. Some regular WhatsApp users may also receive the new design.

Media Filters

WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that allows users to filter the media gallery in chats.

How it will work
The media gallery within chats now has new filters: you can now view photos, videos, GIFs, documents, links, and even stickers separately. The interface has been updated: the chat name is displayed in the header, and filters have been moved below the navigation bar.

Why it’s needed
Finding a specific file type has become much easier and faster. The sticker filter is especially useful, as it was previously difficult to find them among the vast amount of media.

Status
This feature is available to some WhatsApp beta testers for iOS. A gradual rollout to all users is expected.

Account Password Protection

WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to protect their accounts with a password.

How it will work
In the security settings, an option will be added to set a password for your account (6 to 20 characters, requiring letters and numbers). Every time you register your number on a new device, you will be required to enter this password after entering the 6-digit code. If two-factor authentication is enabled, the password is required after that.

Why it’s needed
This is an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access. Even if an attacker obtains your SIM card and verification code, they will not be able to access your account without the password.

Status
This feature is in development for Android. Expected to be released in a future update.

Spoilers in Text Messages

WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to format messages as spoilers.

How it will work
A “Spoiler” option will appear in the text formatting menu. When selected, the selected text will be surrounded by || symbols and hidden behind a translucent box after sending. To read the hidden content, the recipient must tap the message.

Why it’s needed
This feature allows you to hide important details (such as plot twists, match results) in group chats so as not to spoil the experience for those who aren’t yet in the know. Previously, users resorted to sending “disposable photos” as a workaround.

Status
This feature is in development for Android. Possibly expanded to include photos and videos.

Chat history for new group members

WhatsApp is releasing a feature that allows group members to share their recent chat history with new members.

How it will work
When adding a new person to a group, the administrator (or any member with permissions) can select the “Share a story” option. The latest messages from the last 14 days will be shared. You can choose the volume: 25, 50, 75, or 100 messages. Received messages are highlighted in color, and all members see a notification that the story has been shared.

Why it’s needed
This is a long-awaited feature that eliminates the need for newcomers to ask for context, and for existing members to avoid repeating themselves. This is especially relevant for work and topic-based groups.

Status
The feature has been officially announced and has begun rolling out globally to Android and iOS users. It is available in the latest versions of the apps from the official stores.

Conclusion

WhatsApp is actively improving its user experience: the interface is becoming more modern, media search is more convenient, and security and privacy are reaching new levels. The highlight of the week is the long-awaited release of Group History, now available to millions of users worldwide.
