How to transfer your WhatsApp account to another phone?#

You can use WhatsApp on a new smartphone without losing data. For example, if you had a smartphone on the Android system, transfer the messenger data to another smartphone of the same system. Or change the system from iPhone to Android or from Android to iPhone. About how to use an up-to-date account in WhatsApp on a new device, we will consider in this article.

Important!

Transfer WhatsApp to a new Android#

Create a backup on your old device:#

  1. Open WhatsApp;
  2. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup;
  3. Click Backup to save your chats to Google Drive.

Note

Use the same phone number and Google account as on your old device.

Activating WhatsApp on your new device#

  1. Install WhatsApp.
    Download and install WhatsApp from Google Play Store on your new device.

  2. Activating the app.
    Open WhatsApp and agree to the terms of use. Enter your phone number. WhatsApp will send an SMS with a six-digit confirmation code. Enter the received code to confirm your phone number.

    You can also choose to activate via call or push notification.

  3. Restore chats.
    After confirming the number, the app will prompt you to restore chat history from Google Drive. Press Restore and wait for the process to complete.

Important!

When you transfer your WhatsApp account to a new device, the authorization code may not arrive.

In case the request attempts are exceeded, expect 24 hours.

Verify transferred data#

  • After restoring, check that all chats, media files and groups are still there.
  • If any data is missing, try repeating the backup process on the old device and restore on the new device.

Additional Tips:

  • Transfer SIM. If you are using a new number, change it in WhatsApp on the old device first before backing up.
  • Google Drive update. Make sure you have enough space on Google Drive to store your backup.
  • Use Wi-Fi. It is recommended to use Wi-Fi connection during backup and restore to avoid excessive mobile data usage.

Transfer WhatsApp to a new iPhone#

Create a backup on your old iPhone:#

  1. Open WhatsApp;
  2. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup;
  3. Tap Backup to save your data to iCloud.

Note

  • The new iPhone must have the same Apple ID as the old one.
  • Make sure iCloud Drive is enabled for WhatsApp.

Activating WhatsApp on a new iPhone#

  1. Install WhatsApp.
    Download and install WhatsApp from the App Store on the new device.

  2. Activate the app.
    Open WhatsApp and agree to the terms of use. Enter your phone number. WhatsApp will send an SMS with a six-digit confirmation code. Enter the received code to confirm your phone number.

  3. Restore chats.
    After confirming the number, the app will prompt you to restore chat history from iCloud. Tap Restore to start the process.

Verify transferred data#

  • After restoring, make sure that all chats, media files and groups have been migrated correctly.
  • If the data did not appear, try repeating the backup process on the old device and restore on the new device.

Additional Tips:

  • Using the same number: If you are going to use a new phone number on the new iPhone, change the number in WhatsApp on the old device first.
  • Enough iCloud space: Check that your iCloud has enough space to store your backup.
  • Wi-Fi connection: It is recommended to use Wi-Fi for backup and restore to avoid unnecessary mobile internet charges.
