How to tell if a number is connected to WhatsApp Business API (WABA)?#

WhatsApp Business API (WABA) enables businesses to communicate with customers in an automated and scalable way via WhatsApp.

However, it is not always obvious whether a specific number is connected to WABA or is using the regular WhatsApp Business app.

Signs of WABA usage that can be identified through the app:

System notification in chat#

When a user opens a chat with a number connected to WABA, WhatsApp (Meta) displays an information notification at the top of the chat.

What does the notification look like?#

  • Located at the top of the chat
  • Looks like a green system message
  • May be accompanied by a "Click to learn more"

This is the official indicator that messages in this chat are processed through the WhatsApp Business API infrastructure.

What does this notification mean?#

  1. The company's phone number is registered and verified in Meta Business Manager
  2. The company uses the WhatsApp Business API (not the WhatsApp Business mobile app)
  3. Correspondence is carried out via server integration

In this case, Meta is obliged to notify the user that their data is processed through an automated infrastructure - which is reflected in the system inscription.

Why is this important?#

For business: confirms that their channel is set up correctly and users see the WABA label.
For the user: increases trust and informs that the interaction is carried out with the official system, where personal data is processed in accordance with Meta policy.
For integrators: allows you to conduct an express audit of the visual design of the chat.

This is the easiest and most reliable way to verify a WABA connection, without access to internal information or API.
