A New Level of Control for Business Communications#
January 21, 2026

The web version of WhatsApp is preparing for a major update that will give users unprecedented control over the lifespan of messages. Following recent changes in the beta version, it was announced that new, shorter timers are being developed for the "Disappearing Messages" feature. This will allow information to be automatically deleted after 1 hour or 12 hours, opening up new scenarios for secure and effective communication.
Contents#
What is it#
This is an evolution of a familiar feature. While you can currently set messages to automatically delete from a chat after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days, in the future, two new, significantly shorter options will be available: 1 hour and 12 hours.
This development is designed to solve a common problem: information often remains relevant only for a very limited time. One-time codes, temporary passwords, delivery details "for today," or urgent reminders—none of these should be stored in the chat history for years. Short timers will allow messages to have a lifespan that matches their actual usefulness, reducing their digital footprint and the risks associated with data leaks.
Why is it needed#
The introduction of this feature will fundamentally change the approach to exchanging sensitive and time-sensitive information, especially in the business environment.
-
Maximum Security (1 Hour). This mode is ideal for transmitting confidential data: verification codes, bank card numbers, temporary logins, and passwords. Automatic deletion after an hour minimizes the window of vulnerability, even if the recipient's device is compromised.
-
Operational Task Management (12 Hours). Keeps work and personal chats tidy. Daily plans, a one-time delivery address, a to-do list for a work shift, or an urgent task—this information will automatically "self-clean" without cluttering the overall conversation flow.
-
Automated "Digital Hygiene". Users and companies no longer have to manually delete outdated messages. The process becomes automatic and predictable, saving time and reducing human error.
How will it work#
The interface will be intuitive and familiar to those who have used disappearing messages before. New options, 1 hour and 12 hours, will appear in the same timer selection menu.
A key feature will be a contextual alert system. When selecting the shortest timer, WhatsApp will explain that the countdown begins immediately after the message is delivered, as well as warn of the risk if the recipient is offline. This will prevent accidental loss of important information and teach users to use the new features consciously.
Accessibility#
This feature is currently in active development. It was discovered in the latest beta builds of WhatsApp Web. Exact global release dates have not yet been announced. Once the update is stable and ready for widespread deployment, it will be rolled out in stages to all users of the web and desktop versions.
Conclusion#
The addition of short timers is a strategic move by WhatsApp, transforming its privacy feature from a general-purpose tool into a precise, situational one. This is a response to the growing demand for control over digital footprints and compliance with best data practices.
The update will bring the web version of the messenger closer to the functionality of its mobile clients and provide businesses with a powerful tool for building trusting and secure communications with customers.
