WhatsApp to introduce channel subscriptions#
July 7, 2025
WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow channel owners to monetize their content by providing exclusive updates and benefits to paid subscribers.
The latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.19.3, available on the Google Play Store, has revealed that a feature is in development that will allow users to subscribe to paid channels and gain access to exclusive content.
Contents#
How it will work#
In a future update channel owners will be able to set a subscription fee that will last for 30 days. Subscribers will have access to exclusive messages, stories, and media that are not available to regular subscribers.
Once a subscription is enabled, a diamond icon will appear at the top of the app, highlighting the channel with exclusive content.
Security and convenience#
To ensure the security of payments and transactions, WhatsApp will ask channel owners to first verify their identity by logging in to their Facebook account. If the channel owner does not have a Facebook account, they can create a new one specifically for this purpose.
Once the Facebook account is successfully connected and WhatsApp approves the application, the channel will be eligible to activate subscriptions.
Subscription for users#
Users will be able to subscribe to a paid channel directly from the WhatsApp app, choosing and paying for a subscription plan that suits them. To complete the transaction, you should log in to your Google Play Store account, as payments will be processed through the Google Play service.
Once the payment is processed, the subscriber will have access to all future exclusive content, as well as the ability to view previously published updates for the past 30 days.
Full Control Over Subscriptions#
It is important to note that users will have full control over their subscriptions and will be able to cancel them at any time. Additionally, unsubscribing from a channel will also automatically cancel the subscription, ensuring that payments are stopped immediately and transparently.
This means that users are not tied to a chosen plan and can easily customize their preferences.
Content Flexibility#
Channels will be able to choose how to share their content - for everyone or exclusively for subscribers. This means that having a subscription option does not necessarily make all content paid. Users will still be able to subscribe to a channel for free.
This way, subscriptions remain a choice, not a requirement to access the content shared on the channel.
What it gives#
For channel owners:
- A new way to monetize your content.
- Strengthen your connection with your most loyal subscribers.
- Generate revenue directly from your channel community.
- A reliable source of income that can be reinvested into content development.
- The ability to support both free and paid content.

WhatsApp is actively working on improving this feature before the official beta release, aiming to provide users with the most optimized experience possible from the very beginning.
