WhatsApp introduces tags for group members

WhatsApp continues to improve its group chat functionality to make communication more organized and efficient. Recent beta tests for iOS revealed that a new feature is being developed that will allow group members to be assigned custom tags. This feature promises to significantly simplify identifying roles and responsibilities within groups.

What does this mean and how does it work#

With the growing popularity of WhatsApp group chats, especially in large or highly active communities, the need for clearer organization arises. It's often difficult to understand who exactly is responsible for certain issues or has specific permissions within a group. The new group member tagging feature aims to solve this problem.

The tagging feature allows admins or users with the necessary permissions to add short, descriptive labels to member names within a specific group. For example, tags such as "Team Leader," "Coordinator," "Moderator," or "Content Manager" will appear next to the user's name in the group member list.

Why it's needed#

The introduction of tags for group members serves several key purposes:

  • Improved role identification. Tags instantly provide context about a person's work or responsibility in the group. This helps all members understand who best to contact regarding a particular issue.

  • Communication organization. In large or dynamic groups with many members and active discussions, tags help quickly navigate and find the right person for specific tasks.

  • Control for administrators. Initially, this feature allows only administrators to assign tags. This gives them complete control over the group structure and ensures the accuracy and relevance of assigned roles.

  • Role persistence. Assigned tags will persist even if the user reinstalls WhatsApp or changes devices, ensuring continuity and eliminating the need to reassign roles.

  • Future flexibility. In the future, WhatsApp plans to expand this functionality, allowing all group members to assign tags to themselves. This can be useful in collaborative environments where self-identification is important. However, administrators can disable this option, in which case all tags assigned by group members will be permanently deleted unless re-added by an administrator.

Accessibility#

The feature for assigning tags to group chat participants is currently under development. It was discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp for iOS (version 25.18.10.70), available through TestFlight. This feature is expected to appear in a future official update of the app.

Conclusion#

The new tagging feature for group chat participants promises to make communication in WhatsApp more structured and understandable. This will be especially useful for large groups, where managing participants and their roles can be complex. WhatsApp continues to develop its group features, demonstrating its commitment to creating a more functional and convenient communication platform.
