WhatsApp Adds PIN Code for Users with Nicknames#

June 27, 2025

PIN in WA

WhatsApp is constantly working to improve the privacy of its users. And one of the steps in this direction is the introduction of a PIN code for accounts that use the new feature - usernames.

This innovation is designed to give users more control over who can contact them. The PIN code should also seriously help in the fight against unwanted messages and spam.

Why is this necessary#

Earlier, we shared that WhatsApp is adding usernames (nicknames) to display instead of phone numbers.

This functionality simplifies the process of exchanging contact information and makes it safer, because now you can communicate via messenger without disclosing your phone number.

However, adding a nickname can affect the security of the account, so WhatsApp plans to introduce an optional PIN-code function associated with the username.

How it works#

Once this feature is launched, users will be able to set a PIN for their username:

  • When a new contact wants to message you via your username, they will need to enter your PIN-code. Without it, they will not be able to start a conversation.

  • This feature is designed to significantly reduce the likelihood of receiving unwanted or spam messages from unknown contacts. Even if someone knows your username, they will not be able to message you without knowing your PIN.

  • WhatsApp actively encourages users to set a PIN when choosing a username. An information banner will be displayed at the top of the conversations tab encouraging users to enable this feature for additional protection, especially if the username can be easily guessed or revealed.

Availability#

While the PIN feature for usernames is still in development, WhatsApp is actively working on improving it and is expected to be available in future updates.

Conclusion#

WhatsApp once again confirms its commitment to user security and privacy by introducing a PIN code for usernames. This feature, along with the already existing ability to hide your phone number, significantly increases control over who can initiate a conversation in the messenger. In the future, when this feature is rolled out, do not forget to take advantage of the opportunity to set a PIN code for your username. This is a simple but effective way to protect yourself from unwanted contacts and spam, making your communication on WhatsApp even more comfortable and secure.
