New feature for sharing live photos on WhatsApp#
May 8, 2025
WhatsApp is preparing to release a new feature that will make photo sharing even better!
The beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.25.8.12 has been found to support "motion photos" - photos with movement.
1. What is it#
Motion (live) photos are a media format that captures a brief moment of movement before and after a photograph is taken. Unlike regular stills, they contain several seconds of video and audio, providing a more complete and immersive experience of memories.
2. How does it work#
This feature is already popular on some mobile devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy (Motion Photo) and Google Pixel (Top Shot or Motion Photos). Apple also offers a similar feature called Live Photos on the iPhone, and support for it has already been implemented in WhatsApp for iOS. These "live" photos are usually saved in special formats that combine static images with short videos.
In a future update, WhatsApp plans to give users the ability to share live photos in chats, groups, and channels.
When you open the gallery to send a photo, you will see a new button dedicated specifically to live photos. This button will allow you to choose whether to send a static image or a live photo, if one is available.

3. When is it useful#
The feature will be especially useful for showing moments where movement or reactions are important. It will allow you to share not only a static image, but also the dynamic component of the moment.
Live photos are expected to be compatible with both personal and group chats, as well as channels.
4. Conclusion#
Motion photos support in WhatsApp is another step towards a richer and more emotional media exchange. Now you can share your memories not only in the form of static photos, but also in the form of short live moments!
